We have quite a lot of alpacas on the farm. The boys and girls are kept separate for safety reasons. Once a year, we reunite them in a very strategic and structured manner to make babies. Aka, we play matchmaker and say, “Do you like him? No? Okay, on to the next.”
One time, we decided to post a video showing the entire process, not thinking much of it… and it turns out people were interested in alpacas having sex. WHO KNEW?? Our first alpaca breeding video caught the eye of over 400k morbidly-curious people!!
It’s pretty straightforward! We present a female to a male like in a blind date event, and the female either wants his babies or she does not. The only difference between this and a blind date is that if we don’t like someone, we won’t spit in their face, and if we do like them, we’ll restrain our desires until the fourth date.

In part 2 of our alpaca breeding, we showed more of the process of wingwomen helping the males do their thing… since they don’t have any experience. Basically, if you’re really good at puzzles and you can lift a 25 kg box like every job description requires, you can position an alpaca in the landing spot.
I think what people least expected is that we do consent-based matching on the farm. It’s simple… if the female doesn’t approve, we move on! So far, there are some males who have never been given a rose… (chosen) but we do therapy sessions to help them with their feeling of not being good enough.
