Sometimes, the best way to move on is to absolutely destroy a perfectly good dress. At Wreck the Dress in 2022, we loaded our mud, ketchup, mayo, a secret sauce we shall not name, and made sure that if dry cleaners were to see our dresses, they’d enjoy an early retirement. But we didn’t ruin our dresses for no reason… it was to raise money for women and children leaving domestic violence shelters, and to embrace a moment of empowerment.
Wreck the Dress 2022 turned our farm into a runway straight from a kindergarten paint day but without the boogers. Women, women-identifying folks, non-gendered participants, and allies showed up in their wedding gowns, prom dresses, or other special-occasion outfits only to destroy them in grace.
Wreck the Dress raised funds for the Moving Forward Scholarship Fund by Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region, a program designed to support women and children leaving domestic violence shelters. The scholarships provide financial help for education and training, offering a true step forward into a new chapter of life.
At its heart, Wreck the Dress is about freedom. Destroying a gown that once carried weight or expectation becomes a powerful act of release — replacing the past with joy, resilience, and community. Founder Cheryl Haskett, who has shared her own journey of surviving intimate partner violence, describes it best: “Providing an outlet for women who want to move past surviving to thriving is something I feel passionate about.”
